Wales will travel to Nice on Saturday to spend the week preparing for the Italian test.
“The players have worked hard over the past two weeks and the players are aware of the importance of next week,” said Gateland.
“We go to a nice tomorrow for this week and this will be important for this group.”
Wales also suffered noticeable injuries, and lost the eighth number of Harun Winreret and Owen Waterk Center in the first half.
Wainwright was hitting a blow to his head, while Waterk suffered a serious knee injury that requires more evaluation.
“They don't look great,” said Gateland.
“Owen is in a pillar with his knee, and it seems that it can be the ACL (the front cruciate ligament) and Aaron needs HIA (evaluating the head injury) and has a very bad cheat on his face down through his lip.”
