As Fox sports commentators digested the Michigan Wolverines' stunning victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes during rivalry week in 2018, a massive brawl broke out on the field — interrupting the players mid-interview and briefly halting the expert analysis.
The game was played at Ohio Stadium on November 30 in Columbus, Ohio, and the 13-10 upset marked the home team's fourth straight loss to the archrival Wolverines, who entered the game as underdogs with a 6-5 record compared to the Buckeyes' 10-10. 1. A loss effectively knocks the team out of the Big Ten Tournament.
According to video footage and reports by ESPN, the fight broke out en masse after Michigan players and fans attempted to plant their flag at midfield at The Horseshoe. The Buckeyes and those in attendance rushed to stop them from doing so, and the five-minute brawl left players and coaches bloodied and an OSU police officer injured. Punches were thrown and the fight was broken up after police used pepper spray.
According to reports from CBS Sports, flag planting is not an unfamiliar concept, though it was in full effect during the slate of conference games during rivalry week, leading to a few brawls — though none on the Michigan-Ohio State scale.
Footage of the moments leading up to the fight shows Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer ripping a Michigan flag off a fan. The television broadcast showed the players wiping their eyes and coughing after being sprayed with pepper spray. Eventually, law enforcement — who say they will continue to investigate the incident — lined up at midfield to separate the two teams.
“In such a great game, you hate to see things like that after the game. Bad for the sport. Bad for ,” Michigan running back Kalil Mullings told Fox in the aftermath. “At the end of the day, some people have to learn how to lose. You can't fight these things just because you lost the game. All this fighting, we had 60 minutes, we had four quarters to do all this fighting and now people want to talk and fight. This is wrong. It's bad for the game. No category in my opinion. “People have to be better.”
