Cardiff legend Merion Roberts has died at the age of 90.

Roberts was born in the North Wales village of Abergwyngriggin, and played at Welsh secondary schools in 1953 and at senior level for London Welsh before joining Cardiff in 1958.

He scored 58 tries in 225 matches over eight seasons at Arms Park and was club captain from 1964 to 1965.

Roberts played eight caps for Wales between 1960 and 1963, and in 1961 he was part of the Barbarians team that beat South Africa.

After retiring from playing, Roberts coached Cardiff Medicines RFC for over 20 years.

The club said on social media: “We are very sad to announce the passing of the great Merion Roberts earlier this morning at the age of 90.

“An all-round amazing man and a true legend for the Medes.”
