ESPN insider Adam Schefter announced the death of his beloved pet.
Shifter dog Penny died Wednesday after a battle with cancer.
Schefter shared an emotional post on social media that his family planned to drop Benny, but he died in his sleep before the procedure.
Benny was 15 years old when he died.
“This was a day we knew would come since last February, and yet there was still an overwhelming feeling of sadness,” Schefter wrote on X.
“We had planned to give up our beloved Benny, who had been our baby for over 15 years.
“He had liver cancer that had spread, and he could no longer stand, and he stopped eating.
“We scheduled a vet visit to our house at 11am today, and spent Monday and Tuesday crying and with Penny.
“And then, when we woke up this morning to the day we had dreaded, Benny was gone. He died in his sleep. We are in shock.”
Schefter shared that Benny actually survived one battle with cancer years ago and had his kidney removed.
“About seven or so years ago, when he was first diagnosed with cancer, doctors removed one of his kidneys,” Schefter wrote.
“Then last February, as he was running home in our backyard, he missed a step, injured his leg and was barely able to walk.
“Doctors discovered that Benny not only tore his ACL, but he also had liver cancer and other masses that had spread to his lungs.
“On February 23, 2024, his doctor told us that Binhad would survive for two to three months. My wife and I were devastated.”
Fans shared an outpouring of support for Schefter on social media after learning the news.
“Rest in peace Penny, enjoy your trip over the rainbow bridge,” one fan wrote.
“Damn. Sorry for your loss,” another fan said.
