The full lineup for the Berlinale will be announced soon in the German capital. Follow Live Below the titles have also been revealed.
This year's Berlinale runs from February 13 to 23. The festival will mark the first edition with Tricia Tuttle at its helm. Tuttle replaces previous festival directors Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Riesenbeek. Tuttle was the last Chairman of the BFI's London Film Festival.
The festival has already announced a series of titles. German director Tom Tykwer opens the Berlin Film Festival with his latest film a light (Das Licht). The film will be released on February 13. The film will have its world premiere and will be screened out of competition at the Berlinale Palace. Starring in the picture is German actor Lars Edinger (death) and Nicolette Krebitz (A cloud in our house).
The film tells the story of the Engels family. Tim (Lars Edinger), Melina (Nicolette Krebitz), their twins Frieda (Elke Besendorfer) and John (Julius Goes) and Melina's son Dio (Elias Eldridge) are a family who live more side by side than together and nothing brings them together until housekeeper Farrah (Tala Religion) enters their lives. The mysterious woman from Syria puts Engels' world to an unexpected test and brings to light feelings that have long been hidden. In the process, she follows a plan of her own that will radically change the family's lives.
Tom Tykwer has opened the Berlinale twice before: in 2002 with his first international production sky And in 2009 with the political thriller film International.
Michel Gondry and Ira Sachs are among the most prominent filmmakers set to debut new feature-length works in sidebar competition at next year's Berlin Film Festival. Gondry will screen Maya, give me an address (Maya, donne-moi un titre) in the sidebar of the Berlin generation. The festival's website describes the film as “a poignant love letter from Gondry to his daughter Maya that brings to life a poetic and entertaining journey that invites you to dream and laugh.” Sachs returns to the Berlinale Panorama Competition with peter hugar day, Starring Ben Whishaw and Rebecca Hall. The film is described as “a 1974 conversation between photographer Peter Hujar and his girlfriend Linda Rosencrantz.” Bong Joon Ho's latest work Mickey 17 Starring Robert Pattinson will also be shown in Berlin.
