Thirty minutes south of Dayona, in New Samirna Beach, Captain Stephen Canfield, an old warrior guard with over 30 years of experience, highlighted two terrifying cases facing his team daily.
New Smyrna Beach is badly known as “the capital of Shark Bite in the world”, with more than 300 registered bite since the 1980s.
In 2023, they reported eight sharks, which were half a total of Florida that year.
Four bites were reported in just one week in July 2024.
To put this in its correct perspective, Australia recorded 15 in 2023, four of which were fatal.
The United States has a lower death rate due to the smallest tiny shark.
Below, however, the deadly great eggs appear closer to the beach in search of seals.
However, with the improvement of shark monitoring, thanks to partnerships with institutions such as the University of Florida, there is more data than ever to track customs to keep people safer in the future.
The captain said: “They are dragging their studies through us. We are now dropping the actual DNA at the patient's allowance.”
They were presented two years ago, the swabs provide details about the identity of sharks, which help researchers all over the world to track certain types.
Despite her reputation, Captain Canfield confirmed that sharks in New Samirna Beach rarely threaten life.
Volusia boycott is largely home to Blacktip and sometimes spinning who are constantly looking for bait fish.
The troubles occur when the swimmer's leg or food surfers mistake.
“When a swimmer is bitten, it looks like a fast leg punch, then it is over. This happens quickly so that people do not realize this until they look down and see the rupture,” he said.
“The worst cases I have seen include damage to the tendons, but that is rare.”
While shark bites make headlines, Rip currents pose a much greater threat to beach pioneers.
The area near Ponce Inlet, just two miles from New Smyrna, especially dangerous.
The entrance cliff, which is about 40 feet deep, creates a strong flow of water that brings nutrients and attracts fish like Mullets and Menhadens, as well as sharks.
This, in turn, draws fishermen and surfers the area.
“It is almost similar to the vectors’ system, “Captain Canfield explained.
“The water rotates in this corridor, besieging the nutrients and bait fish. The fishermen throw their lines for all types of species, and a browser flows there because the water that is reflected on the sidewalk adds an additional foot to the waves.”
But this nutrient region also creates the treacherous Rip currents.
While talking to the American sun overlooking the ocean, Captain Canfield pointed to two girls playing in the water.
Although they were still close to the beach, the danger was brewing.
He warned, “You can go deep into the hip and start facing a serious problem.”
“The clouds start, and the wave will come. It raises you a little, and before you know that, you are much further than you realize.”
This year alone, there were about 60 rescue operations – a march only.
Captain Canfield gave a decisive advice to anyone who fell into a torn stream: “You just need to get out of the rupture stream by swimming in parallel with the beach. Don't try to swim backward or forward, and most importantly, don't get.”

He also stressed the importance of swimming near the savior guard tower because if the waves have grabbed a person, “we will use all our energy to save a person's life,” as the presence of rescue guards in a nearby place can mean the difference between life and death. “
His warning comes just weeks after a bus in the American spring in the Dominican Republic, amid fears of her arrest in a bad current and drowning.
