In a statement, Cardinal Kevin Farrell – Camerlingo of the Holy Roman Church – announced the death of Pope Francis in the words: “Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sadness, we must announce the death of our holy father Francis.
“At 7:35 this morning (local time), the bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the father's house. His whole life was devoted to serving the Lord and his church.
“We learned to live the values of the Bible with sincerity, courage and global love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized.”
The final general words of the Pope, “Urbi et Orbi” (“To Medina and the World”), were released on April 20, before his death was announced, at the age of 88.
During his appearance in the Vatican, Francis managed to pronounce only one line of his speech, “Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter!” The remaining message was published as part of the official Sunday message for Easter.
