What should have been a family day, full of love and laughter, ended with the tragedy of Joshua Cortis while screaming in his life to save his son and his sister's daughter from drowning on the beach
My father died tragicly while trying to save his son and his niece from drowning during a family day on the beach.
The Joshua Cortis family, a former American army warrior, is saddened after his unexpected death on April 24, 2025. It is understood that he entered water after the two children had difficulty in occurring in the main beach in the Beach of Fernandina, Florida.
According to the police report, when the officers arrived at the scene, they managed to restore two children before finding a non -respondent cortis, according to Fernandina Observer. He was transferred to a local hospital, where he announced his death later.
Based on their investigation and witnesses, the police said it was not sure whether Cortis is already in water at the time of the accident, or whether he rushed as soon as the children saw in distress, according to People.

His loved ones described him as an “American hero” on the Gofundme page that was established to help his family raise money to cover travel costs to and from Massachusetts to attend Joshua's funeral. I read a message on the page: “On April 24, 2025, Joshua was his life at the age of 38, in his final heroic effort, and saved the life of his son and his sister’s daughter from a torn stream in the main beach in Fernandina Beach.
“Joshua was at the Beach of Fernandina from Massachusetts, and his family's visit at the time of the accident.”
The Curtis family told the CBS company that the veteran, who was from Halifax, Massachusetts, was visiting his hometown in Florida at the time of the tragedy. He survived his wife and son Owen, 6.
His family said in a statement to the port: “It is very proud and sad to say goodbye to a man who embodies what he means to be a soldier, a father and a husband and ultimately a hero.”
Cortis served in Iraq and Afghanistan and got the purple heart to the championship, for all ABC ABC. In addition, Cortis is also a coach of the Silver Lake Woriors Youth Program in Massachusetts.
On April 29, in a touching message on the face book page, they said: “With heavy hearts, we share the tragic loss in one of our beloved soccer coaches, Josh Cortis. Josh died last week in Florida, and saved his son and daughter heroine from a dangerous pill.
“Josh was an inventor of the army warriors, a family man, a coach, and a friend of many in our society. His influence on the warrior family was immediately and always. His son had just completed his first year in football, and Josh was preparing to take over the role of the main coach in this season.
“While we are sad for this tragic loss, we ask our community to gather around the Cortis family during this unimaginable time. If you are able to donate to support them.”
