The game studios routinely closed the servers to play online when the numbers of users drop.
Some will be affected within days.

With most of the online games these days, technology companies need to maintain very huge servers to manage everything.
It is not a cheap business to work with millions of players around the world.
Of course, people have, and leave the old games in this process.
A point comes in which you can no longer continue accessing the server until the studios are closed.
For some games that are completely done, it can make them completely useless.
But others may have a way to continue playing alone.
You should usually see a prominent notice in the game that warns you of instructions about what to do – provided that the game is still playing, of course.
