An official proposal to expand the 2030 World Cup was submitted to 64 teams by the South American Administration Authority.
The tournament will host Spain, Morocco and Portugal, after holding the opening matches in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first to have 48 teams, but Conmebol wants to expand in 2030 to celebrate the centenary of the competition.
“This will allow all countries to have the opportunity to live in the experience of the world, so no one on this planet is excluded from the party,” said the President of the Conmebol Alejandro Domingoyes on Thursday.
“We are convinced that the centenary will be unique because 100 years are celebrated only once.”
The idea was first “raised automatically” at the FIFA meeting in March by IGNACIO Alonso.
The FIFA GANNI Infantino President, who participated in the Conmebold conference on Thursday, highlighted the “exceptional teacher” that will be represented by the 2030 championship.
