Deion Sanders confirmed to ESPN that he spoke with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones about their head coaching vacancy and called it an “interesting” scenario Monday night.
“It's really fun to listen to Jerry Jones, which is interesting,” Colorado coach Sanders told ESPN. “I love Jerry and I believe in Jerry. After you get off the phone and process it and think about it, it gets interesting. But I love Boulder and everything about our team, the coaches, the student body and the community.”
Sanders' comment to ESPN came on the heels of a report earlier in the night that he and Jones had talked about the job, which officially opened Monday after Mike McCarthy and Dallas parted ways before the longtime coach became a free agent — and other teams, including the Saints and Bears, could Pounce.
But with the recruiting cycle already underway and teams already completing interviews with top coordinators before the start of the playoff round, the Cowboys fall behind the six other teams — Jets, Bears, Saints, Raiders and Jaguars — that remain open.
Previously, despite rumors and speculation that he might move to the NFL, Sanders remained committed to the Colorado program he revived after taking over in 2023.
He said last week that the only scenario he would leave behind was getting the opportunity to train his two sons.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Sanders had “very strong interest” in opening for the Raiders, but The Athletic later added that the team had “no interest” in pursuing him to become Antonio Pierce's replacement.
During Sanders' two years at the helm of the Buffaloes, they went 13-12 and earned a spot in the Alamo Bowl this season.
Shedor, Sanders' youngest son, starred as a quarterback and is expected to become one of the top picks in April's NFL Draft as well.
During a long football career that eventually led to his induction into the Hall of Fame, Sanders spent five seasons — earning one of his Super Bowl titles — as a Cowboys defensive back and receiver.
Until the Cowboys officially name their next coach, the Sanders variable will continue to play out — especially after Monday's phone call with Jones.
