Former Ireland and Ulster player Stephen Ferris says James McNaby should relish the opportunity after being named as a development player in Ireland's Six Nations squad.
The 21-year-old Ulster back-row will travel to Portugal to take part in the team's pre-tournament training camp ahead of their opening match against England on February 1.
“It's an interesting choice because he certainly wasn't Ulster's first choice in the back row,” Ferris said.
“He's very good with the ball in his hand. He's got great pace. He's a big man too. That's something we've been calling for at Ulster and of course with Ireland at times.”
“It's a big opportunity for him. He's got to go there and enjoy it. You don't go to the Irish camp and think you're a development player and then hide behind it and don't say much. You definitely want that.” Stumble in.”
Uncapped Leinster's Jack Boyle has been named in Simon Easterby's squad, which was announced on Wednesday with three Ulster players – Ian Henderson, Rob Herring and Cormac Isochukwu – making up the 36-man panel.
“It's obviously the same familiar faces that we're all used to, who have also represented Ireland and their county over the last five or six seasons.
“Besides the teams that are playing really well, they have a number of players there. Overall, [I’m] Very happy, a lot of experience and obviously a number of players at the top of their game.
“I don't think there's anyone clear and obvious who's been left out and you might say they should be confirmed. I think someone like Stuart McCloskey or Jude Postlethwaite might be unlucky with the places.”
