A school girl was among 30 skiers injured in a horrific chairlift accident that sent two riders tumbling 50ft from their chairs in Spain.

The horrific accident occurred at the Aston Ski Resort in the heart of the Aragon Valley in northeastern Spain, resulting in the injury of an 11-year-old schoolgirl.

Initial reports claimed that thirty people were injured and nine skiers were seriously injured, but the number was confirmed to be much lower.

Two 18-year-old women are in critical condition and currently receiving medical treatment in the intensive care unit.

The horrific accident caused many people to go off the track while emergency services rushed to the scene.

The accident is believed to have been caused by the failure of one of the chairlifts to return, according to the Aragon government's emergency chief, Miguel Ángel Clavero.

This caused a loss of tension and resulted in wheelchairs falling out and 80 skiers stranded.
