Amorim's comments were criticized by some former Premier League players.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, Nigel Reo-Coker, the former West Ham and Aston Villa midfielder, said it could put more pressure on players.
“I couldn't believe what I was hearing,” he said. “This comment is absolutely crazy.
“I think Amorim is very honest and needs to be somewhat political. By saying that comment and putting it out there, it puts more pressure on the players.
“How are they going to confront him after he said all those things? I hope he gave them a different message in the dressing room.”
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club programme, Chris Sutton, a Premier League winner with Blackburn, added: “It's a message to everyone.
“Usually when managers come out very strong, it's a last resort and a last throw of the dice. He'll probably regret saying that.”
Meanwhile, former Everton and England defender Phil Jagielka suggested that Amorim was trying to limit his responsibility for Manchester United's predicament.
“I think he's basically saying we're bad, please don't blame me. These are not my players. I'm going to play the way I'm going to play. I need some players to come in and play with a system that I'm just going to play.”
He added: “I think he says: I cannot achieve miracles until you give me the players I want.” “It will not change tactically what the team needs between now and the end of the season.”
Speaking on Sky Sports, former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson said: “I'm not sure I'd be very happy if my manager came out and said I was part of the worst Manchester United team in history.”
“I understand what he's trying to do but this is getting awkward.”
Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman can see the point, even if he didn't enjoy hearing it as a player.
“It's a really bold statement to say they're the worst ever,” he said.
“I personally wouldn't enjoy being called that way. It would probably fire me up – and that's probably the intention – but no one wants to be known as the worst team ever. Maybe that's being honest – and completely on target.” “A statement.”
Meanwhile, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher added on Sky's Monday Night Football: “I don't have time for this Manchester United team. I don't feel for the players or their confidence – they're half a joke anyway.”
