Honestly, it's about the money. The FAW says the new cup – which will replace the current Welsh League Cup – will generate £3m per season, with the aim of investing this in grassroots infrastructure projects, women's football and the domestic game in general.

But there is also longer-term hope that Premier League clubs will perform better in Europe than Cymru Premier clubs have done in recent years – with the notable exception of the new Saints this season.

Better results improve the coefficient – a country's ranking – which helps earn UEFA more money for the federation to distribute.

For Premier League clubs, there is the opportunity to play in Europe – and the financial and commercial benefits that come from it.
