Warren Gatland left his role as a main coach in Wales after defeating 14 consecutive test matches.
Gatand, 61, was contracted until the 2027 World Cup, but he left with mutual consent.
Matt Sherat will coach Cardiff will take over as the main coach of the remaining three matches in the six countries.
The CEO of WRU Abi Terney said that both parties agreed that the immediate change was “in the best interests” of the Wales team.
In a statement, Gateland said: “I would like to thank the WRU painting for the faith that appears in me after a difficult campaign throughout 2024 and gives me time and supplier to try to transform things in this 2025 championship.
“We have worked hard, and we have a talented young group that was developing and was desperate to turn the capabilities into results, but now it is the time to change.
“I have reached the end of this particular chapter, but I am still grateful to all those in Wales who supported me, and the players who played for me and all around me, especially my management team, who have contributed to what we have been fulfilled over the years.”
