Pep Guardiola insists that he will only be judged on the results – and he admitted that he is ready to change his football philosophy if that will guarantee him the point that Manchester City needs to secure the Champions League qualification.

City begins on the last day in third place, with a big difference in the goal in Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest – but the defeat in Fulham will open the door for all their four competitors to overcome them.

A week later, when Robin Amorim's refusal to change his beliefs led to a final defeat in the European League and more doubts that arose about his future in Manchester United, Guardiola is not subject to any illusions that he will be sentenced to whether City can overcome the line.

Guardiola said: “The manager is good if you win – if it is not, this is wrong. Any plan when you win, this is really really good,” Guardiola said.

“I thought after many years, it may not be like this. But the manager is really good if he wins … if he does not, he will have problems.

“If we have to play in a certain way to take a point, I will do it. If that means changing the principles, sitting and waiting for the transition, and playing another way to take this point, I will do it. I promise you that I will do that.

“If I think this is the best way to take a point or three, I will do it. We have to respect everything we have to do over a period of 90 minutes or 95 minutes.

“For me, my idea is to try to play to win the game. But if we are playing badly or that opponents play better than us, I will change. You must play to score and win games, but if we have to defend 90 minutes to get the result we will do.”

City last time failed to qualify for the Champions League in 2010 – and two years ago they became European champions for the first time. Last week, the Blues were beaten by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final, and will now end without a cup since the end of the Guardiola first season in Manchester in 2017.

The Cataloni accepts that there will be consequences if his team is suffering from another defeat in the capital – but he insisted that it would not be a fatal blow to the future.

Guardiola said: “After the end of the season, we will decide what we did with the process, what we can do more carefully, what happened, and what we should have expected with our decisions and what we have to do for the best future,” Guardiola said.

“It will be easier to do this if we are in the Champions League.

“If we are not eligible, we will survive. We will move forward and make decisions that we have to make. But the club, I am completely sure, think about the best. I know the season was not good – but it can always be worse, right? So we should focus only on what we have to do in the game.

“For the big difference, it is always like this, and how it stands every time the situation is not perfect. This is what we will have to do.”
