Daily snack boosts the health of people at greater risk of heart disease and strokes

According to Heart UK, one in four adults in the UK suffers from metabolic syndrome, but scientists believe that the daily light meal may help

Scientists claim that eating about 56 grams (ounce) of one snack per day may enhance the health of the heart and intestine. New research, led by Oregon State University, in the impact of food options on adults with metabolic syndrome in the United States.

This syndrome describes a group of cases that are likely to increase the risk of heart disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, high blood sugar or obesity.

As part of the project, the participants were divided into two groups. One group was asked to consume complete, dry or roasted almonds every day for 12 weeks, while the other was asked to eat a snack on the heat -contents itself.

Blood samples captured after the experiment revealed critical changes in those who consumed almonds, including an average decrease in the total “LDL”. This is usually called “bad cholesterol”, which can increase the risk of heart disease if levels rise.

It has been observed a decrease in weight and it is noted that the intestinal inflammation is decreased between those in the almond group, as well. While Heart UK believes that one in four adults in the UK suffers from metabolic syndrome, these results can be changing for the game to improve the health of the population.

With this in mind, Emily Ho, Director of the Linus Pauling Institute, said: “Evidence indicates that people with metabolic syndrome are more likely three times a heart attack or stroke and twice they die from coronary heart disease compared to people who do not have this condition.

“Poor diet and lack of activity contributes to the development of metabolic syndrome, and the health of the bowel and chronic inflammation may also play roles … unless there is anxiety about walnut allergies, it is easy to recommend a handful or two almonds as a healthy light meal, especially for people involved in the risks of metabolism.”

Blood samples also showed that the weighted participants saw a significant rise in vitamin E. These nutrients are very important to maintain healthy skin and eyes while strengthening the body's immune system.

NHS encourages adult men to consume at least 4 mg of vitamin E per day, while women need about 3 mg. It is believed that 28G (one ounce) of almonds contains 50 % of the recommended daily value of vitamin E.

“In addition to vitamin E, almonds have unsaturated, monolithic fats, fiber, polyphenols, biotin, copper, potassium and magnesium,” the assistant researcher Laura Bever also added.

“The full evaluation of the nutritional effect of the almonds is continuing, but the changes in the cholesterol levels that we saw indicate that the conversion of metabolism occurred in people who had a snack on the almonds daily.”
