Police said that ah Lu, 39, was wounded by a stray bullet claiming to be a “peacekeeping” volunteer in the country. He later died in the hospital.
He had no connection to the militant and was “not the intended goal of shooting,” according to the Solt Lake City police administration.
Ah Lu, a father of two children, was known as Samoa's fashion designer who competed in the 17th season of the Runway project.
He ended in the thirteenth place in 2019.
Days before the shooting, ah Lu was seen smiling and talking about how his heritage on the Pacific Island is attached to his professional life in a joint video interview on Facebook.
“Our people are very creative people,” he said in the video interview written by Pacifikabydesign.
“Now that we were here … why don't we withdraw our people with us and work together to make a name for ourselves and our people?
“It is difficult to work in the spaces that you usually do not see our people. But with gravel and perseverance we can reach where we are.
“We are slowly making our way there. We are still learning. We are grateful to the people who sacrificed their time and talents to help us.”
