Meanwhile, VCU basketball said they were “sad” due to Martinez's death.
“The spirit of his opponent and the love of the game loved to everyone here who had the opportunity to get to know him through Ciera and his father, VCU Rodriguez,” said VCU Vice President and Director of Athletics.
“There are not enough words to calm the pain of its loved ones, but the entire VCU basketball community is ready to provide everything we can to raise the families of Martinez and Rodriguez during this devastating time.”
Martinez's father was the VCU goalkeeper between 2007 and 2011 and the last four myths, and later became a major coach in Miami.
While the young man himself had a promising basketball future, he helps lead his team at Liberty Liberty Intermediate School in Angeland, Virginia to the boycott championship last year.
Martinez's mother, Sierra, told the Richmond Times that her son's death was a “accident” while he was in the home of friends.
“It was such a light, and every room lit up. It was my best friend. It was my world.”
“This impact on many, it was very loved.”
