Donald Trump has nominated Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) for attorney general, a surprise pick that will please the president-elect's MAGA allies but could be a flashpoint in the confirmation process.
The selection of Gaetz, a key ally, is likely to raise Democrats' concerns about the independence of the Justice Department, where Trump has pledged to enact a law in retaliation against political enemies.
“Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan weaponization of our justice system,” Trump said in a statement. “Matt will end armed government, protect our borders, dismantle criminal organizations, and restore Americans’ severely damaged trust in the Department of Justice.”
More to come.
