Sweet moment, tense.
Whoopi Goldberg claimed a New York City bakery refused to serve her because of her political beliefs, and the now 145-year-old restaurant has fired back.
On Wednesday's episode of “The View,” Goldberg and her co-hosts Sunny Hostin, Alyssa Farrah Griffin, Joy Behar and Sarah Hynes took a moment to celebrate her 69th birthday.
To celebrate the special occasion, the ladies indulged in some Charlotte Russe desserts, which the “Ghost” actress said were her mother's favorite growing up.
But the sweet moment quickly turned sour, when Goldberg claimed that the Staten Island bakery — which she chose not to name — initially refused to accept her application because of her left-leaning political views.
Identified by Entertainment Weekly as Holtermann's Bakery, the bakery is a family-owned spot beloved by locals.
“Now, I have to tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made her refused to make her mine,” Goldberg said on the show, eliciting strong reactions from the audience and co-stars.
“They said their ovens had broken down, and all sorts of things, but people went and got them anyway, which is why I won't tell you who made them.”
The “Sister Act” star added that her order was not taken up not because she was a woman, but because they “didn't like my politics.”
“But that's okay, because you know what? Listen, this is my mom's celebration. Pick this up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you everyone for celebrating my birthday today,” she added.
It wasn't long before the bakery's owner, Gil Holtermann, refuted Goldberg's claim, telling Entertainment Weekly that “it wasn't for political reasons,” but “because we were having trouble with our boilers.”
“I told Whoopi, 'I can't do this right now,'” she told the outlet. “We have a lot of things going on with my boiler,” he said, “because the building dates back to 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea.” [if we could] He bakes everything.”
Holtermann said that when Goldberg ordered the dessert for the November 13 episode, she “didn't want to make a commitment that I couldn't make” as a result of the technical difficulties the bakery was facing at the time.
She confirmed that she eventually delivered 50 candy bars, which were picked up at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, and insisted the error had nothing to do with Goldberg's politics.
The EGOT winner has never been shy about speaking out against President-elect Donald Trump, whose name she refuses to say out loud on air.
