Three daughters of civil rights leader Malcolm X are suing the FBI, CIA and New York Police Department over his murder.
They accused the agencies of involvement in his assassination as part of a $100 million lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court on Friday.
It claims that they knew about and were involved in the assassination plot against Malcolm X – and failed to stop his death.
At a news conference Friday morning, the family's attorney, Ben Crump, said: “We believe they all conspired to assassinate Malcolm X, one of the greatest thought leaders of the 20th century.”
He said that the “cover-up” carried out by the agencies “spanned decades, preventing the Shabazz family from reaching the truth and their right to seek justice.”
“We are making history by standing here to confront these wrongs and seek accountability in the courts,” Crump added.
He said the family hopes federal officials will read the file “and recognize all the treacherous acts committed by their ancestors and try to right these historical wrongs.”
Malcolm X was assassinated nearly 60 years ago when he was shot multiple times in New York City on February 21, 1965.
The prominent human rights activist, just 39 years old, was about to speak to the Organization of African American Unity when the shooting took place.
Three members of a black separatist movement called the Nation of Islam – Muhammad Abdul Aziz, Khalil Islam and Thomas Hagan – were convicted of the murder but in 2021 Aziz and Islam were acquitted.
The death of Malcolm X was one of four high-profile assassinations in America in the 1960s.
This came two years after the shooting of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and three years before the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy in 1968.
Speculation about whether law enforcement agencies — particularly the CIA or FBI — were involved in his death has swirled for decades.
Who was Malcolm
Malcolm
He was a child of the regime after his father died in a suspicious accident and his mother was unable to care for him because he was hospitalized due to a nervous breakdown.
As a young adult, he moved to New York City and became involved in illegal activities, eventually being sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbery and breaking and entering.
While in prison, Malcolm X was an avid reader, which shaped his philosophy and intentions after prison.
During his time behind bars, he joined the Nation of Islam, a black separatist movement in which he would serve as a minister.
He renamed himself Malcolm X in keeping with the Nation of Islam tradition, which viewed last names as a line of communication for slave owners.
