Saturday Night Live's “Weekend Update” delved into the saga of P'Nut the squirrel this week — bringing in his “widow” to discuss the controversy surrounding the euthanasia of his beloved pet and internet sensation.

P'Nut's bereaved wife, Mrs Hazel Nut, portrayed by Sarah Sherman, appeared at the news desk in a widow's outfit to discuss with host Colin Jost the trials and tribulations she and the famous squirrel had endured.

“The cops raided our house and then Bennott bit one of them, like a fucking hero,” an angry Mrs Knott explained. “Then they kidnapped P'Nut and cut off his head in a rabies test.”

“Oh, it's so hard being in the media spotlight, Colin,” Hazel revealed. “I'm used to doing normal squirrel things, like chasing my tail or running in the middle of the street and seeing a car and then… [shakes uncontrollably]”.

Hazel reveals that P'Nut is just the “human name” for the squirrel and that his real name consists of an indecipherable squirrel squeak.

Sherman told Hazel Nut to Jost how the pair first got together – meeting at a tree – and used innuendo extensively during their courtship with Jost.

P'Nut was first seized by the Department of Environmental Conservation on October 30 – the New York State Department cited anonymous complaints that a known vector of rabies, in the form of Fred the Raccoon, was living in the house.

P'Nut lived with guardian Mark Longo for seven years before he was captured and killed. Longo rescued the puppy after witnessing his mother being killed in a car accident.

The squirrel became a social media star until his sudden and unjust death.

It was revealed earlier this week that DEC beheaded P'Nut as part of a rabies test.

This test revealed that neither Fred nor Bennot had rabies.

The pet was also name-checked by UFC fighter Jim Miller — who called for justice for the furry creature in the Madison Square Garden crowd following his first-round submission win at UFC 309.
