risk! The contestant revealed that he is suffering from stage 4 colon cancer during an emotional moment midway through the game.
Chris Berg, a high school teacher from Farmers Branch, Texas, spoke about his medical battle on national television in hopes of encouraging the show's millions of viewers to get regular health checkups.
Make Chris dangerous! He debuts Tuesday against two-day champion Paul Clawson, a tax analyst from Madison Heights, Michigan, and Mickey McCullough, a librarian from Baltimore, Maryland.
During the interview segment at the top of the game, host Ken Jennings, 50, went on to chat with each of the contestants on their respective podiums.
Although a quick chat is usually used to reveal a fun fact about themselves, Chris used his opportunity to deliver an important message to the audience.
“I understand you're facing a health challenge right now and you wanted to talk about it,” Ken told Chris.
Chris, who was provided with a chair and sat behind the podium during the match, answered: “I've had stage 4 colon cancer since May.
“Diagnosis of young adults” has increased greatly in recent years. I definitely encourage people not to ignore any symptoms.
“And definitely go get tested, especially if you have any family history of it.”
Keane added that his message was “a great word to get out of there.”
On his Facebook page, Chris shared a photo from the match he played with Kane and added another reminder of the importance of health checks.
Chris currently teaches Government and Economics, as well as AP Government and Economics, at Cristo Rey Dallas Preparatory College.
Fans online wished Chris all the best during his recovery journey.
“It was a great match for all three players, as any of the three daily duels going the other way could have changed who would win. All the best to Chris on his hopeful recovery,” one person wrote.
“I wish Chris Berg a full and complete recovery. You did well against two tough competitors, Chris!”
“And I'm rooting for you. Rack up the shlima! But also… tick some more items off your bucket list! Well done,” another said.
“Sending you all the prayers and love Chris! You've got this!!!!” shouted a third.
While a fourth said frankly: “Fuck cancer!” Kick it ** Chris is sending you love!
Chris challenged Mikey and Paul – who were looking to increase his two-day winnings of $36,300.
The match was decided by a trio of Daily Doubles – which dramatically changed the outcome of the winner.
risk! Contestant rules
Passing the Anytime test for Jeopardy! Online is hard enough, but there are also several rules that players must follow once they reach the stage:
- The returning champion is always on the podium on the far left and continues playing until he loses.
- Contestants do not have to say “who's who” or “what's who” in the first round but must do so in Double Jeopardy! And the ultimate danger.
- Contestants can change their responses as long as Ken Jennings or the judges do not make a judgement.
- The minimum bet on Daily Double is $5. Minimum bet for Final Jeopardy! It is $0.
- Written responses in Final Jeopardy! It does not have to be spelled correctly, but it must be phonetically correct (the judges decide this).
- If there is a tie after Final Jeopardy, the tied players go into an additional shootout, and whoever gets the first correct shot wins.
- If all three contestants bet everything on Final Jeopardy! If they are incorrect, leaving them with $0, there will be no returning champion (it's happened before — six times).
The “Sports and City” category was the category in which contestants placed their bets.
Ken read the last clue: “At 800 West Main and 700 Central in this city there is a company and place involved in Triple Crowns.”
While Chris was only right in asking “What is Louisville?” He had plenty of ground to finish third in Final Jeopardy! circular.
Mickey dropped $2,000 to win the game with $18,200 – while Chris finished with $1,600.
In an attempt to take control of the game, returning champion Paul bet all of his $11,000, ending his final match with $0.
Newcomer Mikey will try to continue his winning streak in tomorrow's match.
