This recipe was real turkey, even if there was nothing in it.
A video of a one-piece Thanksgiving recipe is causing stomach churning, with outraged critics calling it “one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen” and warning others “not to try this at home.”
In the clip, which has more than 7.5 million views so far, creator Kate Heintzelman places a raw, unwashed chicken in an aluminum pan, then proceeds to add all of her raw side dishes — straight from the can or box.
It was a recipe for disaster – and Instagram users slammed it for the unhygienic food preparation, with comments such as “What is the salmonella contamination of raw chicken going on here”, and “How come you all didn't die because you all didn't wash”. Meat already?” and “How many people have you killed?”
But some defended her, saying: “This is not cross-contamination… Haven't you cooked meat with vegetables before?”
There's nothing wrong with putting a raw chicken in a skillet with raw vegetables, Heintzelman, 32, told The Washington Post.
“So you can't put chicken with anything then? You can put a crock pot roast with potatoes. Are you telling me you can't eat potatoes because they came into contact with raw meat at some point? That doesn't make sense to me,” she said.
She also doesn't understand all the tweets about not washing the bird.
“You could have 100 people tell you that you need to rinse your chicken,” she said. “Then, if you rinse your chicken, people will say, ‘Why are you rinsing your chicken?’” she said.
Heintzelman, a former Minnesota high school social studies teacher who launched her Instagram account @katewilltryanything during the pandemic, used powdered mashed potatoes and packaged stuffing, along with corn, potatoes and green beans poured straight from the can.
“Not even salt and pepper?!” commented one horrified observer.
Another added: “I hope no one cooks like this for their family.” “Thanksgiving is about cooking with love and gratitude.”
Heintzelman defended her decision to use quick ingredients and not cook from scratch.
“I'm not a grandmother. It's really hard to remember how to make all these things at home and it takes a lot of time,” she said.
“I want an entire Thanksgiving dinner, and if it's just me and two or three other people, and it's 100 pans preparing things… I'm like, 'What if we put everything in one pan?'
Heintzelman tasted the finished product and noted, “The potatoes were a little burnt, but everything else was great.”
Many Instagram users joked that she would be banned from cooking for Thanksgiving celebrations.
“In our family, you'll be asked to bring tissues,” one joked.
“You can bring the menus. Store bought,” another added.
“Damn it, just get the ice,” someone else said.
“Yes, people don’t want me to be in charge of cooking,” she said with a laugh.
Heintzelman plans to make a one-pan ham for Christmas.
