Science suggests that masculine men are more romantic but not necessarily more active.

A study found that higher levels of the male hormone testosterone were associated with increased “courtship effort.”

This hormone gives men deep voices, big muscles, and hairy chests, and is commonly associated with cravings.

But researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara, did not find a direct link to sex drive.

Instead, they saw that higher-ranking single men put more effort into trying to attract potential partners.

Testosterone was generally higher in single people than in married people, suggesting that it motivates them to settle down and then hormone levels decline.

It overturns popular belief

Study author Dr James Rooney said: “Although it is widely believed that testosterone regulates fluctuations in sexual desire, there is little direct evidence.

“It may instead stimulate mating efforts through other means, such as enhancing courtship efforts.

“We have produced evidence that testosterone fluctuations in the normal range may predict changes in mate attraction efforts among single men, particularly in light of social interactions with potential partners.”

It can motivate romantics to tell jokes, offer compliments, or buy flowers.

The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, included 41 men between the ages of 18 and 26.

They took daily saliva samples and answered questions about their sex drive and courtship efforts for a month.

Boosting testosterone helps in finding a partner

Dr Rooney added: “These findings essentially suggest that high testosterone enhances competition efforts among single men.

“Being in a relationship as a result of these efforts may in turn lead to decreased testosterone production as effort shifts away from courtship.”

All of the men in the study had variations in healthy testosterone levels, and abnormally low amounts are known to affect sex drive.
