NFL QB Daniel Jones Signs With Minnesota Vikings After New York Giants Release

Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has a new home in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings.

Multiple media reports say Jones became a free agent on Monday after parting ways with the Giants following a rough season.

Jones is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Vikings for the remainder of this season with a payout of $375,000, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. The star football player will start on the practice squad, which will allow him to pitch for another team if a starting QB position opens up.

The Vikings only had one quarterback under contract for the 2025 season but JJ McCarthy suffered a season-ending injury during a preseason game. Sam Darnold landed the starting QB and led the team to a 9-2 season.

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell was asked about Jones on Monday and remained coy about it, saying, “I will say, a lot of respect for Daniel Jones as a player and a person. I got to know him through the draft process years ago. I'm sure now he's a free agent and there's probably going to be a lot of interest in him at some point.” League level, Daniel will make the best decision for him and his career, and I'm sure he's working through that process properly now.

O'Connell added: “I can just say that I've been a huge fan of Daniel for a long time, and I hope his next step is a good opportunity for him wherever it takes him.”

Jones was released by the New York Giants on Friday, November 22, after spending six seasons with the team.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him,” Giants owner John Mara said in a statement. “We mutually agreed that it would be best for him and the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies that perfectly. We are all disappointed with the way things turned out. Huge appreciation for Daniel and we wish him nothing but the best for the future.”

Jones was benched by coach Brian Daboll last week and dropped to QB4.
