Romy and Michele are close to meeting again: in a new interview, Mira Sorvino says it is a follow-up to the 1997 hit comedy. Romy and Michele meet in high school Starring herself and Lisa Kudrow, it is “so close to being greenlit”.
In the exclusive interview with People magazine, Sorvino mentioned that a deal has been made with a director, and that she and Kudrow are serving as executive producers for the sequel. In addition to the return of Sorvino and Kudrow, Sorvino also confirmed that “almost every character who was important from the original movie will be back…. It's all up in the air, they're making deals, they're saying yes, but they're all there.”
She says the second part could begin filming in the “second quarter of next year.”
“But,” Sorvino cautions, “it's not officially green-lit, so I can't say it's officially green-lit.”
The 1997 comedy was directed by David Mirkin, and featured Sorvino as Romy White and Kudrow as Michelle Weinberger, old friends who return to their 10th high school reunion in Tucson, Arizona, determined to show off the bullies of their old school with some makeup.
