Toprak Razgatlioglu took his 11th consecutive MotoGP World Championship win in the opening race in Portimao.
BMW and Toprak Razgatliolcu took pole position at the Super Pole round as they seek a record 11th consecutive race win. Alex Luz and Danilo Petrucci joined Razgatliolcu on the front row of the grid.
After the opening 20-lap race of the weekend, Razgatliolcu and his BMW team equalled the record of winning 11 races in a row. The Turkish driver said yesterday that winning 11 races did not bother him as he was chasing a record of winning 12 races in a row.
In second place was Alvaro Bautista, who started sixth and dropped to 13th before moving up to second. This was the Spaniard’s 100th MotoGP World Championship finish, making him only the seventh rider to reach his 100th podium.
After suffering serious injuries earlier this year, Danilo Petrucci returned to the podium in the MotoGP World Championship. The Italian rider fought for the win, but failed again.
Garrett Gerloff seems to be more settled now that his future is settled. The American had his best start to a weekend all season, finishing the first race in fourth place.
After leading early on, Alex Laws had to settle for fifth. The Briton made a brilliant start and held off Razgatlioglu, but slowly fell back among the pack.
BMW had three riders in the top seven, with Michael van der Mark in sixth. The Dutchman had challenged for a podium finish, but like Lewis, he had fallen down the order.
Nicolo Bulega missed the entire first practice session and was struggling with illness throughout the weekend, but the Italian still managed to finish seventh in the first race of the weekend.
Axel Bassani had a strong finish putting his Kawasaki into the top ten as he finished the race in eighth place.
The top ten was completed by two GYTR GRT Yamaha riders. Dominique Aigerter finished ninth and Remi Gardner tenth.
There were three British riders outside the top ten with Jonathan Rea taking one point in 15th, Bradley Rae finishing 17th and Scott Redding crashing out.
