The Houston Texans suffered a scary blow on Saturday when their No. 2 receiver, Tank Dell, was out with a “major knee injury,” according to coach DeMico Ryans.
“Right now, he’s going back to Houston,” Ryans said in his postgame press conference. “We'll still be evaluating him, seeing where he's at, and still meeting with doctors to see what's next for him, but it's a major knee injury, and our thoughts and prayers are with him.”
Dell went down with an injury during Saturday's 27-19 loss to the Chiefs, and multiple reports indicated he suffered a dislocated kneecap, which would effectively end his season and put part of next year in jeopardy.
Ryans did not confirm the exact injury.
“We're still evaluating him to see what happens with him,” Ryans said. “He still has to talk to the doctors and do all the procedures there. At the same time, we would like to thank the medical team in Kansas City and the doctors there and their staff for taking him so well, making him a room, and getting him fully prepared.”
The injury occurred while Dell was in the midst of one of his best games of the season, catching seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. But a pile-up in the back of the end zone resulted in him crushing his leg when he collided with teammate Jared Wayne and leading cornerback Trent McDuffie with 11:40 remaining in the third quarter.
Dell was still able to get down 30 yards on the play.
The Texans' sophomore receiver will be coming off a fractured fibula in 2023 that cut short his season last year.
Texans and Chiefs players looked on in horror at the injury, including C.J. Stroud, who was visibly crying on the field.
