The Deadline International team compiled its thoughts using a very loose methodology to define success. We've rounded up the lineup with successful content creators, award winners, and the power players behind massive business deals.
In most cases, it's pretty clear who will win in 2024, but some of our picks may surprise you. Please comment or @us with your opinions and alternatives. Without further ado — and in no particular order — here are the big winners in global film and TV for 2024.
Jessica Gunning
Reindeer baby It was the series that got the world talking. A darkly comedic tale of creator Richard Gadd's experience with a stalker, the unexpected film has been streamed nearly 90 million times on Netflix and earned Emmys. It also sparked a conversation about the blurred lines between art and reality, as well as the duty of care towards the creators and subjects of true crime dramas. At the eye of the storm was Jessica Gunning, the British actress who gave a flawless performance as Martha, a woman who becomes unhealthyly obsessed with Donny Gadd. Then Farage's colleague at Mar-a-Lago took victory in America (Farage is sure to be the first line in an interview with Trump when the president comes to town), and now, with Reform rising in the polls, Elon Musk has sworn allegiance to his cause. Love him or hate him, Farage was a big winner in 2024.
Anna Sawai
Anna Sawai was the rising star of 2024: Shogun. Attracting FX viewers, she became the first woman of Asian descent to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Not bad for someone who was initially rejected for the role of Mariko. Sawai now has a Golden Globe nomination to add to her collection, and the actress can also be seen starring in the second season of Apple TV+ Pachinko.
Mark Boss
This killer format has been a decade in the making, but 2024 was the year Traitors He conquered the world. The Dutch reality series began life in Mark Boss's mind in 2014 after he read the story of a mutiny on a 17th-century ship. Ambani's Reliance will own a little over 63% stake in the combined entity (named JioStar after regulatory approval), with Nita taking over as chairman. It was a complex deal, involving the likes of former Disney India chief Uday Shankar and James Murdoch, and completed in the context of the collapse of a similar $10 billion merger between Sony and Zee Entertainment. Disney CEO Bob Iger said the deal would “create long-term value” in the world's most populous market, but the company had to hand over control to the Ambani family to achieve its goals.
Joe Broom
No brum notes for this guy in 2024. bluish It's been beloved family viewing since 2018, but Australian animation has hit an all-time high this year. This was the year the BBC's male stars faced a reckoning, and their careers were destroyed in the process. BBC News broadcaster Hugh Edwards suffered a most dramatic fall from grace, going from the man trusted to inform the British nation of important events, to pleading guilty to accessing images of child abuse and receiving a suspended prison sentence. The allegations against others relate to misconduct in the workplace. Jermaine Jenas was fired for sending inappropriate messages to fellow female rookies, and Graziano Di Prima was fired.
