Influential DJ Alfredo, who played a huge role in Ibiza becoming a global center for dance music culture, has died at the age of 71.

The Guardian The newspaper reported that while the cause of his death is not yet known, Alfredo suffered a stroke in 2021 and was living in a nursing home.

In response to news of Alfredo's death, Amnesia Club, where he resided during the 1980s, wrote on Instagram: “Thank you for the nights and beats we shared together. Your music and vision shaped the sound of Balearic Beat and the spirit of Amnesia. So many memories have been made through Your energy and your legacy will live on on our dance floor forever. We will never forget you.”

Born Alfredo Florito in Argentina, the dance music lover moved to Europe in 1976, eventually settling in Ibiza, where he learned to DJ in a bar.

He went on to host an extended residency at the Amnesia Club where he championed what The Guardian It is described as “sensual, exciting music across the range of genres, from high-gloss soft rock to pop, reggae, disco, funk, electro and early house: an exhilarating mix that came to define the bohemian spirit of the Balearic Island.”

Alfredo moved on to hold residencies at various clubs on the island, as well as performing at international level.

After his death, musicians began to pay tribute to him, including Faithless artist Sister Bliss, who said, “It's safe to say he changed the world of music for the better.”

Defected Records said: “Rest in peace to one of the greatest to ever do it. Ibiza won't be the same without him.”
