The major streaming service packed with big-name TV series and movies is now completely free – but only for the weekend.
Apple TV+ will be available to everyone without a subscription throughout the coming weekend, January 4-5.
This is the first time the iPhone maker has opened up its premium streaming service in this way, apart from the free trials offered with purchases.
This latest effort to attract people to the app does not require the need to register.
The company started teasing something big for Apple TV+ last week with a series of cryptic social media posts titled “See for Yourself” that people speculated might be a free event.
Despite receiving numerous awards, Apple TV+ has lagged behind in popularity compared to older players in the entertainment space, such as Netflix and Disney+.
Apple originals including The Morning Show, Slow Horses, Lessons in Chemistry, Palm Royale, Masters of the Air and Girls State have all won Emmy Awards.
The service's market share is expected to be just 0.3% in the United States, according to Nielsen data for June 2024.
The free event will serve as an opportunity for those who haven't tried Apple TV+ to get a try — and encourage them to keep watching as a paying customer.
One such hit that Apple is hoping to get people hooked on is the sci-fi psychological thriller series Severance, which is set to release a highly anticipated second series on January 17.
Apple TV+ usually costs £8.99 per month in the UK and $9.99 in the US.
Unlike Netflix and Disney+ which had controversial bans on account sharing, Apple TV+ still allows it with up to five others at once.
There are also no ad-supported options available in Apple TV+.
