It may not surprise some, as most banks suspend operations annually in observance of New Year's Day, a federal holiday.

The situation is no different for Bank of America, as its locations will be closed on January 1, 2025.

Bank of America also closed its doors days ago on Christmas Day, another of the 11 holidays it celebrates each year.

This is fairly common, as most banks follow the schedule set by the Federal Reserve, which celebrates the same 11 holidays every year.

Dates do not change unless the holiday falls on a weekend.

They include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Customers should be aware that the next federal holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is coming up soon on January 15, and they should plan ahead to avoid any issues.

Bank of America customers who typically deposit or receive funds on a federal holiday, such as New Year's Day, should expect the transaction not to occur until January 2, 2025.

“Please note that holidays may impact the time it takes to process certain transactions and that updated transaction information may not be displayed until the next business day after the holiday,” Bank of America's website notes.

Limited access

It is also important to note that Bank of America ATMs and online banking are still available on New Year's Day, but no in-person needs can be met at branches.

“Wells Fargo customer heart dropped as account drained of $19,000 in terrifying call – bank said they couldn't help”

Finding any bank with operating branches on New Year's Day is nearly impossible for Americans and other popular financial institutions like Wells Fargo are no help.

Wells Fargo is also following the Federal Reserve's schedule and closing about 5,600 branches on New Year's Day.

ATMs and online banking offerings are also still available.

More information about holiday closures can be found on the websites of both financial institutions.

11 federal holidays observed by banks

  • New Year's Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents' Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • independence day
  • labor day
  • Indigenous Peoples' Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas day

Even Chase Bank's holiday schedule details nationwide closures on New Year's Day.

Capital One, Truist and Citibank will also close their branches, according to USA Today.

Mail madness

Americans should remember that other government services, such as the United States Postal Service (USPS), are closed on New Year's Day.

Regular mail delivery, retail services and package pickup are not available.

Only USPS 24/7 self-service kiosks are open on New Year's Day, and USPS Priority Mail Express delivers at select locations.

To avoid any issues or stress with banking and mail, it's best to plan ahead next year before any federal holidays.

Some retailers remain open on New Year's Day, and many have extensions to return this holiday season.

Ulta and Amazon have offered a similar window through January 31.

Target is also expanding its shopper policy.
