King Charles expressed his sadness at the death of a British man he knew personally in a car attack in New Orleans on New Year's Day.
BBC News reported that Edward Pettyfer, 31, who was among 14 people killed in the attack, was the stepson of Alexandra Pettyfer, the nanny who cared for Princes William and Harry when they were teenagers after their parents, Charles and Diana, separated.
Before her marriage, Alexandra Pettyfer's name was Alexandra Legge-Bourke, but she was always referred to in the British press by her nickname “Tiggy”. An outdoorsy aristocrat, she was credited with creating an atmosphere of normalcy for the young princes, especially after their mother's death in 1997. She left the royal family in 1999, after marrying Charles Pettyfer.
The BBC reported that Charles had been in contact with the family to offer his condolences. The Pettyfer family paid tribute to Edward as a “wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend.”
She adds that William and Harry were informed of Edward's death. The BBC says Harry will not comment publicly on the sad news.
Attack on January 1street US Army veteran Shams al-Din Jabbar was involved in driving a pickup truck into crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans' famous French Quarter, killing 14 people and wounding at least 38 others. International media reported that the attacker abandoned his car and began shooting at police. The FBI confirmed that the attacker died after a gun battle with three police officers.
