For the first time since 2015, Billy McConnell stood on the podium in the British Superbike Championship at Thruxton. McConnell’s last time on the podium in the British Superbike Championship was at Cadwell Park for Smiths Racing BMW. After a fantastic first 20 British Superbike Championship races with the C&L Fairburn Properties/Look Forward Racing Honda team, McConnell has secured a medal.
McConnell joins the C&L Fairburn Properties/Look Forward Racing Honda team for the 2022 season. The team supported McConnell for two seasons in the British Superstock Championship, before moving to the British Superbikes Championship. After securing his first podium with the team, McConnell couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunities they have given him:
“A big thank you to C&L Fairburn/Look Forward and the whole team. We started with Superstock and then two years later we moved to Superbike, so a big thank you to the team.”
On Saturday, McConnell finished fifth in the opening race of the weekend after battling with seven other riders for the podium.
“In the first race, we thought we did well too, but unfortunately Kyle got ahead of us on the last corner. I was happy to get second, then Ryan pushed us on the next left and then he pushed me into the green lines, then I lost all my power there, but if I said I would finish fifth in the first race, I would be happy with that!”
After qualifying third and finishing fifth in race one and two, the Australian was determined to finish third in the final race of the weekend.
“Obviously your expectations go up the better the result you get! From the first part of the weekend we knew we had a good bike, the Honda is working really well. I can’t criticise the performance of the team, all the mechanics, all my sponsors, it’s nice to put some titles in their pocket.”
