A Bloomfield police officer, who posed as a 14-year-old girl, had an online conversation with Janek on Dec. 24 via Al-Khatib's website, according to a police report obtained by the local outlet.
Janick talked about wanting to have sex and arranged a late-night meeting at a McDonald's restaurant in Bloomfield, Connecticut, with the person he believed was a minor on Dec. 30, police said in the report.
Instead, investigators were waiting for Yannick near a McDonald's and arrested him when he arrived.
Officers found a laptop, cell phone and a receipt for condoms purchased that night during a search of his car, police said. A pre-written apology was discovered on the laptop – addressed to the family of the non-existent girl Jannick thought he was seeing.
Matthew explained [in the apology] The report said: “No one deserves to worry about their child on any night, and in this case it has become something to worry about.”
He also described himself as “the evil of the world” in the apology note, according to police.
The SHU suspended Janek after his arrest. He had served as the university's associate director of athletics communications since December 2022, according to his since-deleted profile on the school's website.
Janick admitted to driving to Bloomfield with the intention of having sex with the person he thought was a 14-year-old girl during an interview at the police station, police said. He also sent photos of himself in his underwear to the undercover officer, according to the report.
“Matthew claimed he was acting abnormally today because he was bored and lonely, and did not feel satisfied with his work,” the police report said.
However, police said Janik also admitted that he spoke with 50 girls who claimed to be under 18 years old.
He allegedly admitted to receiving nude photos from the girls, including at least a dozen from girls as young as 11 and 12 years old. He claimed that he did not save any of the photos, according to the report.
The disgraced athletics employee reportedly told police he had primarily focused on girls between the ages of 14 and 20 for about a decade.
Janick had previously met in person with people he had been talking to online, including a woman in her 20s and a 16-year-old while he was still living in New Hampshire years ago, police said.
Janek was held in lieu of $250,000 bail and was scheduled to appear Monday in Superior Court in Hartford, Connecticut.
