Seth Meyers praised Los Angeles firefighters and emergency workers who helped around the clock to put out devastating fires across the city.
“This is a horrific tragedy of unimaginable devastation, and we, first and foremost, want to send our thoughts and love to everyone affected,” Myers said at the top of the “A Closer Look” clip.
“The images are surreal. The loss is immeasurable, but in the face of this loss, friends, neighbors and strangers alike come together to help each other. The courage of firefighters and emergency workers is unparalleled. No firefighter should have to pay for a beer, or a matcha smoothie.” Because it's Los Angeles, again, he added: “The kindness, compassion, resourcefulness and solidarity that was displayed was nothing short of astounding and astonishing.”
But then, Myers turned to a regular enemy: Donald Trump. The NBC host criticized the former and soon-to-be president's response to the tragedy, blaming Gov. Gavin Newsom and a made-up document — the Water Restoration Proclamation — as well as the fish.
“Trump is lying about water, this time, the water that brave firefighters are using to fight wildfires,” Myers said. “The firefighters are doing a brave job. Then there is the president-elect, who decided to step in, not to help, but to spread nonsense that would make emergency response more difficult.”
on daily show, Host Desi Ledych also addressed Trump's response to the tragedy that affected hundreds of thousands of people in Southern California.
“The story dominating the news right now is the L.A. wildfires,” she said. “There have been a lot of challenges as L.A. workers try to get these fires under control, like water shortages and manpower shortages, but there's one thing we have an endless supply of: “Good old fashioned, made in America, blame.” “Of course, one of the country’s main blame producers is Donald Trump.”
Trump also blamed Newsom for policies regarding Delta smelt. “For the record, no, the Los Angeles fires have nothing to do with smell. But in Trump’s defense, words are difficult, and smell is only one syllable, while climate change is three syllables.
She also mocked Republican response to the fires, blaming diversity hiring policies. “Can't women be firefighters? They let dogs be firefighters,” she joked.
last night, Late Show Stephen Colbert provided details on resources people can use to help those affected. “We know that people in Los Angeles are resourceful, kind and do everything they can to help each other, and here we want to send our love and care to all Los Angeles residents who are facing what is described as the most dangerous.” A devastating fire in the city’s history.”
