Danilo Petrucci ends the first day at the top of the MotoGP standings, ahead of Alvaro Bautista and Toprak Razgatlioglu.
After Toprak Razgatliotlu led the opening session of the weekend earlier today, Ducati regained its footing this evening.
The Ducati team finished FP2 in first and second place. However, the rider on pole position was Danilo Petrucci and not any Aruba.it Racing Ducati rider. Alvaro Bautista finished second but crashed in the final minutes.
Toprak Razgatlioglu managed to finish third in his BMW in the second free practice session of the day. However, the Turkish driver suffered mechanical problems that ended the session in the first and second free sessions.
Despite not being able to take part in the entire first practice session, Nicolò Bulega finished fourth this evening. The MotoGP rookie made a late attack to move up the standings.
Dominique Agerter has struggled for most of the 2024 season, but the Swiss rider showed promise this evening. As Yamaha’s number one rider, Agerter is expecting good things tomorrow as he finished the first day in fifth place.
In the first session of free practice, Jonathan Rea finished sixth, the same position he held this evening. The six-time world champion had a good Friday by his standards with Yamaha and will be in contention tomorrow.
BMW had two riders in seventh and eighth with Michael van der Mark in seventh and Garrett Gerloff in eighth.
Alex Laws was the best Kawasaki rider all day, finishing FP2 in ninth place. Kawasaki was not as strong in Portimao as it has been at previous circuits this season.
Despite his late crash, Michael Ruben Rinaldi still finished 10th. The Italian’s future in the MotoGP world championship remains uncertain, but a good weekend in Portimao should help him secure a place in the 2025 championship.
The remaining British riders, Scott Redding and Bradley Rae, finished 13th and 19th outside the top ten.
