Allison Williams (M3GAN) has signed on to star in Regretting You, an indie adaptation of the 2019 novel from It Ends With Us scribe Colleen Hoover, Deadline has confirmed.
Written by Susan McMartin, with Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) aboard to direct, the film will center on the complex relationship between Morgan Grant and her daughter, Clara. Morgan became a mother at a young age, putting her own dreams on hold to raise Clara. As Clara grows into a teenager, their relationship becomes strained, especially after a tragic accident claims the life of Chris, Morgan’s husband and Clara’s father.
The project hails from Constantin Film, whose Robert Kulzer is set to produce, along with Brunson Green and Anna Todd.
Most recently seen in the horror hit M3GAN and Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, Williams’ upcoming projects include M3GAN 2.0 and Kill Me with Charlie Day.
Best known for directing an adaptation of John Green’s beloved YA title The Fault in Our Stars for Fox which grossed over $307M worldwide, Boone’s other directorial credits include Stuck in Love., The New Mutants, and Paramount+’s The Stand.
Out in theaters now, Sony’s adaptation of Hoover’s 2016 novel It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, is expected to be a big hit, opening in the mid $40 million-range. The film centers on Lily (Lively), who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life. A chance meeting with a neurosurgeon sparks a connection, only for Lily to begin to see sides of him that remind her of her parents’ troubled relationship. Directed by Baldoni, It Ends With Us also stars Brandon Sklenar, Jenny Slate, and Hasan Minhaj.
Primarily known for her work in the romance and YA spaces, Hoover has thus far put out four book series, including It Ends with Us, along with 12 standalone novels. Currently, an adaptation of her 2018 novel Verity, from writer Hillary Seitz and producers Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund, is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. She was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world just last year.
