After two podiums in Portimao, Alex Lewis can now challenge for a top-three finish in the MotoGP World Championship in 2024.

During the weekend in Portimao, Alex Laws did not finish outside the top five in the three races. In the first race, Laws finished fifth, but Sunday was the highlight for him. The British rider stood on the podium in both the Super Pole races and the second race, finishing third in both.

It was Lewis’ eighth and ninth podiums of the season, and only his third in a season in which he stood on the podium twice over the weekend.

“I’m happy with what I did on Sunday, I’m back on the podium again, a full-length podium. It was one of the best weekends for me this year, it was fun,” said a smiling Luz after the second race.

Lewis went on to explain how much he has enjoyed the season and the feeling he has gotten from his Kawasaki this season.

“I really enjoy riding the bike, I can go at full speed and I enjoy it. I feel fast. The team has a great atmosphere, we enjoy everything together. I am really looking forward to Magny-Cours, so yes it is a positive weekend.”

After Bautista’s crash in Race 2 and Luz finishing third, the Briton is now just 10 points behind the Spaniard. With Luz fourth and Bautista third, he has a real chance of challenging for third this season. It’s something Luz played down when asked about, but he wants a tough battle at Magny-Cours in a month’s time.

“I try to do my best in the standings. But the truth is that he was faster than us, and he made some mistakes. I was consistent, and I made some mistakes myself, but overall, I was consistent. I just feel like I need to prove my speed in the races a little bit more to compete with the guys in front of me. But Magny-Cours is a track that I enjoy, and I’ve had some good results there, so why not have a good fight and see if we can challenge the top three in the championship.”
