Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos had an extra sweet celebration on Live with Kelly and Mark this morning.

The two honored National Soft Serve Day by each helping themselves to a bowl of vanilla soft serve ice cream at the co-host desk. As Consuelos pulled out bowls of both rainbow and chocolate sprinkles, Ripa regaled the Live audience with the fact that in South Jersey, they call soft serve “custard.”

Consuelos quipped, “You also call spaghetti sauce ‘gravy,’ which is weird. Which is not what I think it is.”

Both Ripa and Consuelos visibly enjoyed their on-air sweet treat, as the former gushed that “there’s nothing wrong with it.”

“I mean, it’s just so good,” Ripa added. “Soft serve, may she reign supreme forever. And I don’t understand why it’s only one day. It should be national soft serve month.”

Consuelos then informed viewers that “there was a battle” over who started the sweet sensation “around the time of World War II.”

“Tom Carvel said he accidentally created soft serve when his ice cream truck caught a flat tire and he was forced to sell off his ice cream quickly and it was kind of, you know, soft,” he read. “Dairy Queen also claims to have invented soft serve in Illinois.”

As for Dairy Queen, who Consuelos opted to side with as the creator of soft serve, founder J.F. McCullough “said his son perfected their formula and held a massively successful all-you-can-eat trial at their friend’s store.”

Consuelos continued, “Do you remember when we went to the soft serve place, was it Carvel, in Southampton? And the girl recognized me from Riverdale. And I used to ask for a small, and I got a massive one. You remember that?”

However, Ripa was too consumed by… well, her own consuming, to respond properly.

“I remember that. I’m still eating,” she uttered while taking another spoonful.
