Shaw and Gorst survive loser’s bracket

British star Jayson Shaw and reigning world champion Fedor Gorst have advanced to the last 64 after surprising defeats pushed them into the loser’s bracket.

The world No. 5 Shaw overcame Hunter Lombardo to avoid an early exit from the tournament.

As a reminder, this tournament features a double-elimination format, giving players a second chance to stay in the competition.

Ko Ping-Chung continued his title defence yesterday and he did it in style.

The reigning champion confidently beat Fitim Haradinaj 9-4 to advance into the last 64.

And winning must run in the blog as his brother Ko Pin Yi also advanced smoothly overcoming Toh Lian Han with a 9-3 win.

Huge Matchroom docuseries incoming

The team behind the hit Netflix series Drive to Survive are set to produce a documentary on Matchroom bigwigs Barry and Eddie Hearn.

An excerpt of a Matchroom statement read: “Matchroom is delighted to announce it will feature as part of a new documentary series on Netflix.

“The global media streaming service confirmed today at its Netlfix: Spotlight Session, at the Edinburgh TV Festival, that the series – produced by Box to Box, the award-winning team who have delivered shows such as Drive To Survive, Full Swing, Sprint and more – is officially in production.

“The project – set to air in 2025 – which will get up close and personal with one of the biggest sports promoters in the world and has the working title: Matchroom: The Greatest Showmen.

“Matchroom is home to the biggest names in sport – from boxing to snooker to darts to Nineball, fishing and more – and is the epicentre of some of the most lucrative deals and sporting events globally.

“With unprecedented access to Barry Hearn, his son Eddie and the whole Matchroom team at the Essex-based HQ, this documentary series will dive into the drama of the family empire that has become synonymous with British sporting culture.”

Baz Hearn racks them up

Matchroom supremo Barry Hearn ticked off a milestone on his bucket list by making his debut at the US Open earlier this week.

Poland’s Konrad Juszczyszyn wiped the floor with the 76-year-old, although he did produce an impressive long shot 2-9 combo to win him a rack.

Biado and Filler through

Pride of the Philippines Carlo Biado has won his Round Four Losers qualification match with a 9-1 win over Jerry Arvelaez.

Germany’s Joshua Filler was also victorious, whitewashing America’s 9-0 Jeremy Sossei in their losers’ match.
