Every first Monday of September, Americans are honored and recognized for their hard labor for Labor Day.
This year, Labor Day falls on September 2.
Since June 28, 1894, Labor Day has been considered a federal holiday.
While this day has become a goldmine for sales across major retailers, many operations will shut their doors for 24 hours.
Importantly, two crucial services will be limited throughout the day.
If you’re expecting checks and other important documents to grace your mailboxes, all USPS post offices will be closed.
However, Priority Mail Express is available throughout the year and doesn’t apply on federal holidays.
According to ABC7, UPS and some FedEx locations will also close up throughout the day.
In addition to mail services, the Federal Reserve Bank is closed on all national holidays, including Labor Day.
These banks include Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank, and JPMorgan Chase.

Should you need to make any payments or are expecting a payment on September 2, it is likely to be delayed by a day or so.
Nonetheless, there are three ways civilians can access and deposit funds.
These ways include visiting an ATM, using online banking to move money, and utilizing your bank’s app to deposit checks.
Though banks are closed, ATMs will be open. To check if an ATM near you is open, it is advisable to use your bank’s store locator for further information.
Additionally, your bank will accept your deposit if placed on Monday, but it most likely won’t process until the following day.
Lastly, sending money using transfer services such as Zelle should work normally throughout the day despite the federal holiday.
Federal Holidays in 2024
While Labor Day is one federal holiday, there are many throughout the year where Americans can most likely expect the day off and certain services to be closed.
In addition to banks and postal services, some retailers, such as Costco, are closed for Labor Day.
It is best to contact your closest store to inquire about their opening times.
What is Labor Day?
The U.S. Department of Labor states the holiday is “an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.”
The holiday was further created “to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.”
Labor Day was first celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882.
By 1894, 23 additional states had adopted the holiday.
It wasn’t until June 28, 1894, that President Grover Cleveland signed it into law, making the first Monday of September a federal holiday.
