Several best-selling books have inspired new and returning television series this year as well as box office magnets like It Ends With Us and later in the fall — Wicked. Still novel adaptations more are in the works, like the many romantic comedies of Emily Henry and a few more Colleen Hoover best-sellers.
The year 2024 has covered the range of historical fiction like Apple TV+’s Pachinko or FX’s Shōgun, young adult best-sellers like and John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down, science fiction with Apple TV+’s Dark Matter and Netflix’s The Three Body Problem and many more.
Still to arrive in 2024 are Alfonso Cuarón’s Disclaimer and the third season of Netflix’s Heartstopper based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels.

Heartstopper Season 3 – Netflix
The third season of Heartstopper arrives Oct. 3 on Netflix. Season 2 took elements from the third graphic novel.
Disclaimer – Apple TV+
Alfonso Cuarón’s next project, a seven episode limited series Disclaimer, is based on the book by Renée Knight. The show premiered at both the Venice and Toronto film festivals.
Say Nothing – Hulu
The FX adaptation of Patrick Radden Keefe’s Say Nothing will arrive on Hulu on November 14.

Lulu Wang directed all six episodes of Expats, adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel, The Expatriates. The limited series stars Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, Ji-young Yoo, Brian Tee, Ruby Ruiz, Jack Huston and more.
One Day – Netflix
Following in the footsteps of the 2011 film directed by Lone Sherfig and starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, Netflix launched a television adaptation of David Nicholls’ best-selling novel starring Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod.
Shōgun – FX/Hulu
James Clavell’s 1975 book served as the basis for FX’s Shōgun, starring Anna Sawai, Cosmo Jarvis, Tadanobu Asano and more.
Mary & George – Starz
Starz’s period series starring Nicholas Galitzine, Julianne Moore and Tony Curran is based on the 2017 book The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I by journalist Benjamin Woolley.
Apples Never Fall – Peacock
Apples Never Fall is Liane Moriarty’s latest book to get a television adaptation treatment after Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu and Big Little Lies on Max. Melanie Marnich served as showrunner behind the limited series, which starred Annette Bening, Sam Neill, Alison Brie, Jake Lacy, Conor Merrigan Turner, Essie Randles, Georgia Flood and more.
Manhunt – Apple TV+
Apple TV+’s limited series starring Tobias Menzies, Anthony Boyle, Will Harrison, Lovie Simone, Patton Oswalt and more is based on the history book Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer by James Swanson.
Palm Royale – Apple TV+
Palm Royale, starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Carol Burnett, Ricky Martin, Leslie Bibb, Josh Lucas and more, is loosely based on the book Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel.
3 Body Problem – Netflix
Netflix science fiction series 3 Body Problem has foundations in Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy.
We Were the Lucky Ones – Hulu
We Were the Lucky Ones on Hulu stars Joey King, Logan Lerman, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Hadas Yaron, Robin Weigert, Amit Rahav, Lior Ashkenazi, Eva Feiler, Sam Woolf, Moran Rosenblatt and more, The epic family drama comes from the true story chronicled in Georgia Hunter’s book of the same name.
A Gentleman in Moscow – Showtime
Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s starring series on Showtime is based on the best-seller by Amor Towles.
Ripley – Netflix
The television series Ripley starring Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn and more follows the film The Talented Mr. Ripley starring Jude Law and Matt Damon.
Franklin – Apple TV+
Franklin starring Noah Jupe and Michael Douglas, is based on Stacy Schiff’s book, A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France and the Birth of America. It explores Franklin’s career.
The Sympathizer – Max
Based on the book of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Sympathizer on Max stars Robert Downey Jr., Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Vy Le, Sandra Oh and more.
Under the Bridge – Hulu
Hulu’s Under the Bridge follows the real-life murder of teenager Reena Virk in British Columbia. Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone star in the adaptation of Rebecca Godfrey’s book.
Tattooist of Auschwitz – Peacock
Heather Morris’ The Tattooist of Auschwitz was adapted into a limited series on Peacock starring Jonah Hauer-King and Anna Próchniak.
Dark Matter – Apple TV+
Based on the book by Blake Crouch, Dark Matter stars Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Jimmi Simpson and more.
Bridgerton Season 3 – Netflix
Season 3 of Netflix’s Bridgerton was based on the book in Julia Quinn’s series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which followed the friends-to-lovers love story of Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan). Next season will focus on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson).
Queenie – Hulu
Queenie adapted from Candice Carty-Williams’ best-selling novel by the author-turned-showrunner herself, arrived on Hulu June 7. The collaboration between Hulu and Onyx Collective stars Dionne Brown in the titular role of an everywoman who comes of age in the comedic, chaotic and cathartic series.
Maxton Hall: The World Between Us – Prime Video
Prime Video’s Maxton Hall: The World Between Us is adapted from Mona Kasten’s book Save Me.
My Lady Jane – Prime Video
My Lady Jane, based on the best-selling novel by Brodi Ashton and Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows, stars Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel, Henry Ashton and more.
Presumed Innocent – Apple TV+
Following in the footsteps of the film starring Harrison Ford, Greta Scacchi and more, the Apple TV+ series starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga is also based on the book by Scott Turow.
House of the Dragon – Max
House of the Dragon is based on more of a textbook by George R. R. Martin compared to Game of Thrones and the series of books behind that show. There will be two more seasons of the GOT prequel series, based on A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.
Lady in the Lake – Apple TV+
Lady in the Lake, based on Laura Lippman’s novel of the same name, stars Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – Netflix
The BBC first released the six-episode first season of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which then went to Netflix in August. Wednesday star Emma Myers takes on the titular character Pippa Fitz-Amobi in the show based on the first of three books by Holly Jackson.
Bad Monkey – Apple TV+
Based on Carl Hiaasen’s best-seller, Bad Monkey premiered on Apple TV+ Wednesday, August 14. The show stars Vince Vaughn, L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat, Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet, Jodie Turner-Smith and Victor Turpin. Charlotte Lawrence, John Ortiz and Zach Braff guest star.
Pachinko Season 2 – Apple TV+
Pachinko Season 2 will follow Part 2 of Min Jin Lee’s best-selling novel of the same name. The show stars Minha Kim, Lee Min-ho, Anna Sawai, Soji Arai, Jin Ha, Youn Yuh-jung and more. It arrives August 23 on Apple TV+.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 – Prime Video
Based on material found in J.R.R. Tolkien’s book The Silmarillion as well as appendices in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, Prime Video’s The Rings of Power season 2 premieres on the streamer August 29.
Tell Me Lies Season 2 – Hulu
Tell Me Lies Season 2 will continue the eight-year story of a toxic relationship, based on Carola Lovering’s book. Season 2 arrives Sept. 4 on Hulu.
The Perfect Couple – Netflix
The Perfect Couple series coming to Netflix Sept. 5 is based on the book by Elin Hildebrand. The series will star Nicole Kidman, Live Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Meghann Fahy and more in a messy murder mystery.
The Chicken Sisters – Hallmark+
Based on the book by KJ Dell’Antonia, The Chicken Sisters follows a family feud and generational conflict over fried chicken. Two chicken chains, Mimi’s and Frannie’s, divide the small town that they serve with loyal customers dedicated to each. Starring Lea Thompson, Wendie Malick and more, the series starts streaming on Hallmark+ Sept. 10.
Three Women – Starz
Three Women starring Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, Gabrielle Creevy, Blair Underwood and more, is adapted from the book by Lisa Taddeo. The series premieres Sept. 13.
