ANDY REID has announced a Kansas City Chiefs star has already been benched – just three games into the season.
The Super Bowl-winning head coach has overseen a promising start to 2024-25 in his quest for three rings in a row.
They are 3-0, and completed another huge win on the road on Sunday, beating the Atlanta Falcons 22-17.
However, the Chiefs left tackle position has been an area of concern, causing major disruption.
Neither Kingsley Suamataia or second year star Wanya Morris have started the campaign strongly.
And Reid has announced his decision on the position, which is sure to come under scrutiny if it goes wrong.
He told the media that Morris would start their Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
This means Suamataia has been officially benched, with his future at left tackle now uncertain.
It is only the 21-year-old’s first season in the NFL after being drafted in the second round at number 63.
And it is clear the youngster needs time to develop, working alongside top coaches after his time in college.
He was a standout at BYU, and named All-Independent First Team Offense by College Football Network.
But Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been under huge pressure this season from the blindside.
That has lead to the tough decision by Reid, who explained why he had made it on Monday.
“I thought Wanya did some good things in there”, Reid said.
“We’ll probably stick with that.
“Kingsley rotated in and played some tight end and was able to get some good reps.”
Diamonds are forever
Kansas City’s newest Super Bowl rings feature 529 diamonds, 38 rubies and a nod to their game-winning play.
The Chiefs flashed their latest piece of jewelry at a special ceremony on Thursday, June 13.
The new bling features the years of Kansas City’s Super Bowl wins – 1969, 2019, 2022 and 2023.
It also has a handwritten drawing of Andy Reid’s ‘Tom and Jerry’ play which won Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Kansas City beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in February.
And the rings feature 22 diamonds to represent the points Kansas City scored in the second half and overtime.
Nineteen diamonds also represent their 11 straight winning seasons and eight AFC West titles in a row.
While there is also commemorative patch for the late Norma Hunt, the matriarch of the family which owns the Chiefs who died last summer.
The move by the Chiefs comes with Travis Kelce suffering a tough start to the season.
The future Hall of Fame tight end has not been up to his usual high standards so far.
He had just four catches for 30 yards against the Falcons on Sunday evening.
And he has just 69 yards across the three games combined, a poor return by his standards.
Kelce was spotted looking miserable on the bench by live CBS TV cameras during the win.
But that could also be down to his popstar girlfriend Taylor Swift missing the showdown after being spotted in New York.
