Jussie Smollett's 2021 conviction over his alleged mock assault on the streets of Chicago is now behind him empire actor.
In a somewhat surprising ruling, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned the legal consequences that Smollett suffered because of the high-profile incident.
“We recognize that this case has generated significant public interest and that many people were dissatisfied with the decision of the original case and believed it to be unfair,” the court’s opinion said, according to the Chicago Tribune. “However, what may be more unjust than the resolution of any single criminal case is this court’s assertion that the state is not obligated to honor agreements on which people have maliciously relied.”
