Amazon said it will invest $8 billion in artificial intelligence company Anthropic, bringing its total investment in the company to $8 billion over the past few months alone.
The two companies teamed up last September, with Amazon providing $4 billion and Anthropic naming Amazon Web Services as its lead cloud provider.
The new agreement will see Anthropic name Amazon's AWS as its primary training partner, as well as continuing to be its primary cloud provider. The company will also use AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips to train and deploy its future AI models.
The partnership will also give AWS customers early access to the ability to map their own data to human models, the companies said in a press release. Anthropic is the company behind Claude, a family of multilingual fashion models.
This deal comes at a time when a wide range of companies across much of the economy (particularly the technology sector) are pouring billions into artificial intelligence.
“The response from AWS customers developing generative AI applications powered by Anthropic at Amazon Bedrock has been amazing,” said Matt Jarman, AWS CEO. “By continuing to deploy Anthropic models in Amazon Bedrock and collaborating with Anthropic on the development of our custom Trainium chips, we will continue to push the boundaries of what customers can achieve with generative AI technologies. We are impressed by Anthropic’s pace of innovation and commitment to responsible development of generative AI, and look forward to deepening “Our cooperation.”
Tens of thousands of customers, from startups to enterprises and government organizations, use Anthropic's AI models in the AWS cloud, the press release said. Technology powers everything from customer service chatbots, coding assistants, and translation apps to drug discovery, engineering design, and complex business operations.
“This has been a year of incredible growth for Cloud, and our collaboration with Amazon has been instrumental in bringing Cloud's capabilities to millions of end users across the tens of thousands of customers on Amazon Bedrock,” said Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Amazon Bedrock. Anthropic. “We look forward to working with Amazon to train and enhance our most advanced AI models with AWS Trainium, and help unlock the full potential of their technology.”
