A video of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dancing at a Taylor Swift concert amid a devastating protest in Montreal sparked outrage over the weekend.
Trudeau, who represents a district in Montreal, attended Taylor Swift's concert in Toronto on Friday evening.
A video posted on X shows the Canadian politician dancing and singing along to “You Don't Own Me” before Swift takes to the stage.
Toronto is located about 280 miles west of Canada's capital, Ottawa, and 330 miles west of the Montreal area that Trudeau represents.
The same night, anti-NATO demonstrators fired smoke bombs and marched through the streets of Montreal carrying Palestinian flags.
According to the Montreal Gazette, rioters set cars on fire and clashed with police.
The demonstrators also threw small explosive devices and metal materials at the officers. At one point, the group burned an effigy of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A photo of Trudeau dancing amid protests in his hometown sparked outrage online. Some social media users even compared Trudeau to Nero, the notorious Roman emperor known for “fooling around while Rome burns.”
Don Stewart, a Member of Parliament (MP) who represents part of Toronto, called out the Prime Minister in a post on X.
“Lawless demonstrators attack Montreal in violent protest. “PM is dancing,” Stewart wrote. “This is the Canada the Liberal government built.”
“Restore law and order, the safe streets and communities of the Canada we once knew and loved,” the MP added.
Trudeau on Saturday denounced the protests as “horrific.”
“What we saw in the streets of Montreal last night was horrific,” the Canadian leader said. “Acts of anti-Semitism, intimidation and violence must be condemned wherever we see them.”
“Royal Canadian Police [Royal Canadian Mounted Police] They are in contact with the local police. There must be consequences, and rioters held accountable.”
